wakemate to begin shipping in march

Sorry for the radio silence – we have some good news: the first run of units will go out in March! We do not know how large the run will be right now, but it will not fulfill all of the pre-orders. We'll let you know if you're in the first batch as soon as we can. Thanks for your continued patience and interest in WakeMate; we can't wait to show you what we've made!

i hope mine is in the first batch. i've been playing with the iphone app 'sleep cycle' and whilst the idea is good, having to put my phone on/under my pillow is annoying. i look forward to using wakemate.

stop making it complicated

When you start something new, sure, there’s a learning process. But also realize that while the learning is good, the doing doesn’t have to be complicated at all. Find the simplest way to do things, and just start doing it. You’ll learn by doing.

the three examples listed are exactly how i have tackled things in the past. researching every option, putting too much time and thought into things. now i'm trying to simplify and take the simplest approach as it allows more time to actually do things, rather than think about doing things.

also, his point re: blogging - just hit publish - is why i love posterous so much.

less

Stop buying unnecessary things.
Toss half your stuff, learn contentedness.
Reduce half again.

List 4 essential things in your life,
stop doing non-essential things.
Do these essentials first each day, clear distractions
focus on each moment.

Let go of attachment to doing, having more.
Fall in love with less.

something i have been trying to do this year. i'm a collector, avid spender and sucker for shiny new things. less is a goal of mine to save money, reduce my consumption and to do fewer things, better.

my quick thoughts on the apple ipad

everyone is giving their thoughts on a device that almost no one has seen in the flesh yet. will it succeed or fail? beats me, all i can say is it's gorgeous and i can definitely see a use for it in my home. after watching the keynote last night, i wanted to catch up on my feeds and see what had been written about the ipad etc. as i sat on my couch it would have been the perfect device to do so.......

oh, and closed vs open? in a device like this, i like the closed platform. i will sacrifice a little extra functionality for the user experience i assume it will provide (similar to the iphone). then again, i can't understand why people jailbreak iphones, so i'm probably not the target market for hating on closed systems. ;)

youtube's new html5 video and quality

i'm extremely pleased that youtube have decided to implement html5 video (via a beta program). being a mac user, there is nothing i hate more than flash. it's just an awful, awful thing.

however i was disappointed with the quality of the html5 versions of videos compared to their flash equivalents. i decided to screen shot both of them and post the results here. the video is the excellent portal typography version of still alive that i linked to a few days ago. the first image is the flash version (480p, not the hd 720p version0 and the second is the html5 h264 version.

pretty clear results as best as i can see.
