i wanted to tidy the mess of cables that lay under my desk recently and researched options. initially i was going to use a cable tray (like the ikea signum) or a cable organiser box however i decided i also wanted my external hard drive, airport and modem hidden as well. i found decluttered.com which had exactly what i was looking for. i decided to use their ideas for my own desk.
i had to store the following items:
- apple airport extreme base station
- linksys wireless modem
- lacie external hard drive
- usb hub
- apple magsafe power adaptor
- 2 power boards
i didn't want to have the items underneath the desk though, instead i decided to mount them on the back of the desk. it always faced a wall anyway, so it was a better fit in my eyes. i purchased a piece of mdf pegboard and had it cut to size. i drilled four holes through the back of the desk and threaded bolts through them. i then fastened nuts onto the bolts to fix them to the desk permanently.
i fixed the mdf pegboard onto the bolt threads and then fixed it in place with wing nuts. this meant that the bolts were always affixed, however i could easily remove the board at any time by unscrewing the wing nuts.
each of the devices was cable tied to the board, often joining several together to extend the length. everything can be removed pretty quickly by cutting the cable ties and moved easily. the cables were difficult to keep tidy, but as the idea is to hide them from view, i'm not too fussed.
above is the finished product. each device is nicely spaced out and i have some room for extra devices in the future. i also have a spare powerboard to plug in devices if needed.
all up the costs were:
- masonite pegboard 4.8mm 1220 x 915 - $29.37
- wing nuts (2 packs of 3) - $7.90
- nuts and bolts - $6.95
- cable ties (pack of 100) - $5.50
totalling $49.72. all up it took me about three hours from start to finish.
with everything in place, there are no visible cables from the front, leaving a clean desk free of clutter as you can see here:
