steve balmer’s iphone clam chowder

There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It’s a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get.

it's easy to poke fun at things people have said in the past, but ballmer's stubborn pre-launch views that all apple products are doomed to fail is becoming comical.

so, avatar had a little in the way of computer hardware for its special effects

The computing core - 34 racks, each with four chassis of 32 machines each - adds up to some 40,000 processors and 104 terabytes of RAM. The blades read and write against 3 petabytes of fast fiber channel disk network area storage from BluArc and NetApp.

hard to imagine that kind of computing power really.

our new car - vw golf 118tsi

anne and i just replaced our bmw 318i with a new volkswagen golf 118tsi. it's pretty much standard, except for dsg gearbox, metallic paint (united grey is the colour) and mdi (ipod interface). we've only had it for three days and the excitement over owning a new car certainly hasn't worn off.

the engine is only 1.4l, yet due to the turbocharger and supercharger it puts out 118kw and 240nm of torque. suffice to say, it's plenty powerful enough. it's also a very usable type of power as you don't need to ring it out to the redline to use it all. the fuel economy is excellent, with the official numbers stating a combined highway/city rating of 6.2 l/100km.

the car has the dsg (or dual clutch) gearbox. it looks and is used like a traditional automatic, however it is actually a manual transmission with two clutches. this means the next gear is always preselected and therefore the shifts are almost instant. it's easily the quickest shift i've ever seen and is so smooth you wouldn't even know the gears have changed if it wasn't for the tacho changing revs. getting used to the dsg gearbox took a couple of drives, as there is a hesitation when taking off (imagine placing a manual car into gear and then taking off). at first i thought it a little strange, however it soon became something i forgot about and i don't notice it now.

the attention to detail of the car amazes me, with nice little touches everywhere. in particular i like the small vw logo in the headlights (pic 6) and the gorgeous interior/instrument lighting at night. this is something volkswagen and audi in particular have always done well. the only downside is the auxiliary input, which looks decidedly aftermarket and just 'lumped' onto the center console. this is disappointing. it's normally located inside the center console, however the mdi option necessitates it is moved as it's now located in there.

overall, i'm very, very happy with the car and know we made the right choice (other options were both second hand - bmw 120i, audi a3) and i couldn't be happier. how it fares in my list of best cars ever owned remains to be seen. which reminds me, i really should get to posting all my past cars up here like i've been meaning too!

wakemate to begin shipping in march

Sorry for the radio silence – we have some good news: the first run of units will go out in March! We do not know how large the run will be right now, but it will not fulfill all of the pre-orders. We'll let you know if you're in the first batch as soon as we can. Thanks for your continued patience and interest in WakeMate; we can't wait to show you what we've made!

i hope mine is in the first batch. i've been playing with the iphone app 'sleep cycle' and whilst the idea is good, having to put my phone on/under my pillow is annoying. i look forward to using wakemate.

stop making it complicated

When you start something new, sure, there’s a learning process. But also realize that while the learning is good, the doing doesn’t have to be complicated at all. Find the simplest way to do things, and just start doing it. You’ll learn by doing.

the three examples listed are exactly how i have tackled things in the past. researching every option, putting too much time and thought into things. now i'm trying to simplify and take the simplest approach as it allows more time to actually do things, rather than think about doing things.

also, his point re: blogging - just hit publish - is why i love posterous so much.

less

Stop buying unnecessary things.
Toss half your stuff, learn contentedness.
Reduce half again.

List 4 essential things in your life,
stop doing non-essential things.
Do these essentials first each day, clear distractions
focus on each moment.

Let go of attachment to doing, having more.
Fall in love with less.

something i have been trying to do this year. i'm a collector, avid spender and sucker for shiny new things. less is a goal of mine to save money, reduce my consumption and to do fewer things, better.
