my quick thoughts on the apple ipad

everyone is giving their thoughts on a device that almost no one has seen in the flesh yet. will it succeed or fail? beats me, all i can say is it's gorgeous and i can definitely see a use for it in my home. after watching the keynote last night, i wanted to catch up on my feeds and see what had been written about the ipad etc. as i sat on my couch it would have been the perfect device to do so.......

oh, and closed vs open? in a device like this, i like the closed platform. i will sacrifice a little extra functionality for the user experience i assume it will provide (similar to the iphone). then again, i can't understand why people jailbreak iphones, so i'm probably not the target market for hating on closed systems. ;)

Apple always make their products aesthetically appealing and the iPad is no exception. It's unlikely I'd want one of the first gen models but if it does ever get a front-facing camera and an open platform (or jailbroken) I could see a use for it.

I find myself leaning my phone against a cup of tea while having breakfast or wedging it in-between the two seats in front of me on the train to watch video. This big iPhone is probably too big to lean on things - does that mean we have to hold it or worse, buy a stand?

i'm assuming it's light enough to hold up and obviously people will lean it against their legs etc when sitting down. you can buy stands for it, but i don't see that being a primary use case.

Yes please for me. I find myself using my iPhone increasingly instead of the MBP. So this will work for me. I think they will need to allow widget style apps to run as background tasks though. Some form of multi-tasking is absolutely required on the device

i agree on widget style apps running in the background. i think it would be unfortunate if you couldn't have twitter or ichat running in the background, as an example.
